Drayton Alexander is a genderqueer, neurofabulous theater artist specializing in production dramaturgy and new play development.
Trained in Dramatic Writing at NYU Tisch Asia, Drayton brings a keen awareness of story, structure, character, and dramatic engine to their work in the wrighting of a play.
Recent projects include:
Collaborating on a musical in development about a new kind of wild west show, created with writers Lizzie Hagstedt and Lisa Helmi Johanson, and director Céline Rosenthal. Workshops at Asolo Rep and Fergusons New Musicals Lab.
Dramaturgy on Spin, a one-woman demonic trauma spincycle class written & performed by Kate Sumpter and directed by Sarah Jane Schostack, which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2023 and was hailed Best Solo Performance of The Fringe by Theatre Weekly. It played the Arcola in London in 2024.
Dramaturgy on many shows at Asolo Rep, including Josh Rhodes’ production of Cabaret, which was subsequently produced at the Old Globe; Céline Rosenthal’s production of Dial M for Murder, which was subsequently produced at Pittsburgh Public Theatre; Bianca LaVerne Jone’s production of Chicken and Biscuits; Peter Rothstein’s production of Holland and Simpatico’s Twelve Angry Men: The Musical; and new plays in development by Lauren Gunderson, Ken Ludwig, and Monteze Freeland.
Drayton has been Literary Manager at Asolo Rep, Company Dramaturg at The Flea Theatre, and a Literary Associate with London’s New Earth Theatre. He has taught with NYU Tisch Asia, Marymount Manhattan College, Singapore Repertory Theatre, the Tepper Semester, and LaGuardia Community College.
They live in Flushing with their husband and their cat.
