Serials @ The Flea

Created by Dominic Spillane and Stephen Stout, Serials is a late-night play competition in which short episodes from five original plays are performed, the audience votes for their favorites, and three series return the next week, facing off against two new pilot episodes.

In 2018, The Flea created a Writers Room, hiring eleven playwrights to create a full year’s worth of Serials. I was part of the team that chose the writers, and I led the Room from 2018 - 2020. In 2019, I joined Michael Rain as Co-Artistic Producer. Our goal was to create compelling shows for our late-night audience, and also to help launch plays that would have a life beyond Serials.

Our inaugural group of playwrights were Nicco Aeed, Oscar A.L. Cabrera, Chloé Hayat, Lily Houghton, Brian Kettler, Yilong Liu, Matt Minnicino, Liz Morgan, Jessica Moss, Madhuri Shekar, and Marina Templesman. Joshua D. Young joined the Writers Room in 2019, with Gina Femia, Dylan Guerra, Amina Henry, and Gethsemane Herron-Coward as Guest Writers.

While Serials at The Flea has come to an end, the legacy of the Writers Room lives on: Yilong Liu’s PrEP Play, or Blue Parachute, which debuted in Serials, had its full-length premiere at New Conservatory Theater Center in San Francisco in 2022.
